They're on Fire
By SCOTT SUTTELL
It’s no surprise to those of us who live here, but Forbes Traveler seems pretty shocked that Cleveland has some great restaurants, including one of the best brunches in the country.
That honor goes to Fire Food and Drink, the exceptional Shaker Square restaurant of chef Doug Katz.
In a story looking at the nationwide evolution of brunch from eggs-and-bacon-athon to elegant cuisine, the magazine writes, “Over in Cleveland — you heard correctly, Cleveland — Chef Doug Katz whets diners’ appetites for smokin’ hot brunches at his restaurant Fire. Think braised pork crepes with crème fraiche, Argentinian pepper relish and fried egg, or housemade pancetta with French brie, poached apricots and baby arugula flatbread, or keep it simple with lemon soufflé pancakes with blueberry compote. This is one of The Next Iron Chef judge’s Michael Ruhlman’s top picks.”
Mr. Ruhlman, a Cleveland native, calls Fire a “contemporary American place that has great waffles and great pancakes, done nicely and originally.”
The fun blog Cleveland Foodie has a Q&A with Mr. Katz in which he shares his five essential spices, his favorite and least favorite foods to prepare, and the most unusual food he has ever tried.
The answer to that last one is “rocky mountain oysters.” If you don’t know what that is, look here. Consider yourself warned. |
